Fit Notes (medical certificates)

You only need a doctor’s note if you are unable to work and are ill for longer than seven calendar days. Absences of up to 3 days need no certificate and absences of 3-6 days require a “self certificate” which you can obtain from your employer. Where patients attend hospital for ongoing treatment and are advised they should refrain from work because of their condition it is the responsibility of the hospital doctor to issue a fit note.
